Singapore: Where the Future Meets Culture, Color & Adventure

Singapore completely surprised me.

It is one of those destinations that manages to feel futuristic, sophisticated, colorful and culturally rich all at the same time. From the spectacular skyline surrounding Marina Bay to lively neighborhood streets, Sentosa Island and an airport that deserves a place on your sightseeing itinerary, Singapore offers an incredible amount to experience.

Having visited Singapore myself, I found it to be a wonderful destination for couples, families, first-time visitors to Asia and travelers looking to add an exciting stopover to a larger Asian vacation.

Here are some of the highlights I recommend adding to your Singapore itinerary.

Dreaming of Singapore — Marina Bay Sands creates one of the most recognizable skylines in Asia.

Marina Bay: The Heart of Modern Singapore

Marina Bay is the perfect place to begin exploring Singapore.

The waterfront is surrounded by some of the city’s most recognizable architecture, but the building that immediately commands your attention is Marina Bay Sands.

Its three towers and dramatic rooftop SkyPark have become synonymous with Singapore. Visitors can also head to the Sands SkyPark Observation Deck for panoramic views over the city.

One of my favorite things to do here was simply walk along the waterfront. Around every corner there seemed to be another beautiful perspective of the skyline.

Meet Singapore’s Famous Merlion

No first visit to Singapore feels complete without seeing the Merlion.

With the head of a lion and the body of a fish, the Merlion has become one of Singapore’s best-known symbols. The fish body represents Singapore’s origins as a fishing village, while the lion refers to the city’s historic name, Singapura, or “Lion City.”

Merlion Park is also a great location for photographing Marina Bay.

Walk Along Singapore’s Waterfront

Singapore is a city made for exploring on foot, and the Marina Bay waterfront is particularly enjoyable.

Along the way, you’ll encounter beautiful views of the financial district, striking architecture and landmarks such as the Olympic rings at Olympic Walk.

It is worth allowing yourself some unstructured time here. Not every travel experience needs to involve rushing from attraction to attraction. Sometimes walking, taking photographs and absorbing your surroundings becomes one of the best parts of a trip.

Architecture That Makes You Stop and Look

One thing I loved about Singapore was its architecture.

Even buildings that you might normally walk past become attractions themselves.

The spherical glass building at Marina Bay is a perfect example. Sitting directly on the water, Apple Marina Bay Sands creates a striking contrast against Singapore’s towering skyline.

Discover Singapore Beyond the Skyscrapers

While Singapore’s futuristic skyline gets plenty of attention, make sure you venture beyond Marina Bay.

Some of the most interesting moments come from walking through the city’s smaller streets and neighborhoods, where colorful shophouses, cafés, boutiques and local businesses reveal another side of Singapore.

Areas such as Kampong Glam and Haji Lane provide a wonderful contrast to the polished skyscrapers of the financial district.

This is part of what makes Singapore so interesting: modern cityscapes and traditional neighborhoods coexist within a relatively compact destination.

Gardens by the Bay

Another Singapore experience I recommend is Gardens by the Bay.

The famous Supertrees are vertical gardens, and after dark they become the centerpiece of the Garden Rhapsody light-and-sound experience. Visitors can also explore the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest.

This is an excellent attraction to combine with Marina Bay Sands since both are in the Marina Bay area.

Travel Advisor Tip: Try to experience this part of Singapore both during daylight and after dark. The atmosphere changes dramatically when the city lights come on.

Escape to Sentosa Island

When you’re ready for something completely different, head to Sentosa Island.

Sentosa brings a resort and entertainment side to a Singapore vacation, making it especially appealing to families or anyone who wants to mix sightseeing with some fun and relaxation.

With attractions, beaches and entertainment, you could easily devote much of a day to Sentosa.

Singapore After Dark

Don’t head back to your hotel too early.

Singapore is beautiful during the day, but after sunset, the city takes on an entirely different personality.

Buildings illuminate the skyline, their lights reflect across Marina Bay, and the waterfront becomes a wonderful place for an evening stroll.

Depending on when you visit, you may even experience special events or fireworks like we did.

Changi Airport: Don’t Just Fly Through It

There aren’t many destinations where I would tell travelers to deliberately spend extra time at the airport.

Singapore is the exception.

Changi Airport and Jewel Changi Airport are experiences in themselves, so don’t automatically treat your departure day as the end of your Singapore sightseeing.

The centerpiece of Jewel is the spectacular Jewel Rain Vortex, a 40-meter indoor waterfall surrounded by the greenery of the Forest Valley. Jewel identifies it as the world’s tallest indoor waterfall.

Jewel also offers extensive shopping and dining, indoor gardens and attractions such as Canopy Park.

My Changi Airport Travel Tip

Give yourself extra time if you want to explore Jewel rather than arriving at the airport with only enough time to check in and board.

Jewel also offers baggage storage and early check-in for participating airlines, which can make exploring before departure easier.

How Many Days Do You Need in Singapore?

For a first visit, I would recommend approximately 3–4 days to experience Singapore without making the trip feel overly rushed.

A simple itinerary could look like this:

  • Day 1: Marina Bay, Merlion Park, waterfront and evening city views
  • Day 2: Gardens by the Bay and more of Marina Bay
  • Day 3: Explore Singapore’s neighborhoods and visit Sentosa Island
  • Day 4: Additional sightseeing, shopping or dining, followed by extra time at Jewel Changi Airport before departure

If Singapore is part of a larger Asia itinerary, it can also work beautifully as a stopover.

Is Singapore Worth Visiting?

For me, absolutely.

What stood out most was the variety packed into one destination.

One moment you’re surrounded by gleaming skyscrapers and futuristic architecture; the next you’re walking down a colorful neighborhood street. You can explore waterfront landmarks, visit gardens, spend time on Sentosa Island, enjoy the city after dark and then discover that even your airport has become part of the vacation.

Singapore feels modern without losing its character—and that’s exactly what made it memorable for me.
