Three Nights in Jamaica

Six o’clock walk was the best hour of the day.

My husband surprised me with three nights in Jamaica for our anniversary — no itinerary, no plan to conquer anything, just a north-coast beach and a return flight. It turned out to be one of the easiest, best trips we’ve taken. Here’s why a short Jamaica getaway can be the whole point, not a compromise.

We’ve taken the big trips too — the ones with a route, a checklist, and a different bed every second night. This wasn’t that, and I kept waiting to feel like we were missing something. We never did. Three unhurried days in one place held more than a week of moving around ever has.

That’s the trip I now help other couples plan: the anniversary, the quiet reset, the first warm week away together in a while. You don’t need to become an expert on Jamaica to have a good one — you need the right base, a short flight, and someone who’s already sorted the small stuff. What follows is what we’d tell you first.

You don’t need a two-week expedition to make Jamaica count.

Because it was a surprise and we had seventy-two hours on the ground, there was no pressure to go out and conquer a schedule. We took the margins of the day instead. The property at sunrise and the property at dusk are two different worlds — and by the time everyone else drifts out to the pool at noon, you’ve already had the quietest, best part of the island to yourselves.

A guaranteed win

One reliable all-inclusive on the north coast, transfers handled, nothing to overthink. For a short trip, certainty is worth more than options.

Mornings are yours

Set an alarm for six. The beach, the water, the light — all of it empty. It’s the one bit of discipline the whole trip pays back.

The same paths you walked at breakfast feel like somewhere else after dark — dinner outside, lights in the palms, nowhere you have to be.

What to know before you go

Getting there is genuinely short. Montego Bay (MBJ) is the north-coast gateway, and most resorts sit fifteen to forty-five minutes out. Direct flights from a lot of US hubs mean a three-night trip is actually three nights, not a travel-day sandwich.

Entry is simple for US travelers. No visa for tourism up to ninety days — you need a valid passport, a return or onward ticket, and the online immigration/customs (C5) form completed before you land at the official enterjamaica.gov.jm. Departure tax is normally already in your airfare.

Go all-inclusive, and pick one excursion at most. For seventy-two hours, all-inclusive removes the decisions that eat a short trip. If you leave the resort once, make it count — Dunn’s River Falls or a Blue Mountains coffee drive. Two excursions is one too many.

Timing. Winter and spring are driest and busiest; hurricane season runs June through November, so a short trip in those months is a small gamble. USD is widely accepted — carry small bills for tips.

One day, four hours — the reason we set the alarm.
