How to Read a Safari Quote (What’s Included, What’s Not)
Two quotes for the “same” safari can differ by thousands — because they include different things. One has a private vehicle; another a shared van. One names your lodges; another says “or similar.” Here is how to read past the paragraph, what to check line by line, and the one question most people never ask.
Why two safari quotes are so hard to compare
The gap is almost never a trick — it is that the quotes contain different things. Until you line up what each price actually includes, you are not comparing trips; you are comparing paragraphs.
What a fair quote should include
- Accommodation, named lodge by lodge — not “or similar”
- All park and conservancy fees, a real and rising share of the cost
- Meals, stated clearly (full board is normal on safari)
- A vehicle and a professional guide — ask whether it is private or shared
- Airport and inter-park transfers, and government taxes
What is often not included (and surprises people)
- International flights, and sometimes internal light-aircraft flights
- Your eTA, travel insurance, and tips for guides and staff
- Drinks, especially premium drinks, and some meals on travel days
- Optional experiences like a balloon flight or a cultural visit
- The single supplement, if you travel on your own
The questions worth asking
- Is the vehicle private and just for my party, or shared with strangers?
- Is it a closed 4×4 with a pop-up roof, or a minivan? This shapes the whole experience.
- How many guests, maximum, per vehicle?
- Which exact lodges — named — and are they inside a park or a private conservancy?
- What is the deposit, and what is the cancellation policy?
The one question most people never ask
Ask whether the ground operator belongs to KATO, the Kenya Association of Tour Operators, and whether your booking is bonded. Membership and bonding mean there is protection in place if something goes wrong with the operator — your money is not simply gone. It is the least glamorous question on this list and the most important one.
Honest tiers, honest words
Be a little wary of a quote leaning hard on words like luxury, ultra, and five-star. Those words are unregulated; anyone can print them. What matters is the actual lodge, the actual vehicle, and the actual inclusions.
